Romantic Getaways

Romantic Getaways

When you think about romance, it conjures up images of long walks along the shoreline, horse-drawn carriage rides, and enjoying some fine dining before you stroll back to your luxury accomadations.  Mackinac Island lies between the upper and lower peninsulas of the state of Michigan.  Its natural beauty is very compelling, but it is the total ban of automobiles which lends itself to being such an idyllic setting for romantic getaways.

Mackinac Island has a rich history going back to the Native Americans, well before European settlement. It became a strategic focal point for the trappers and traders, enough so that a fort was built here and the French and English took turns trying to possess the island.  Now, its scenic natural beauty and secluded location make it an ideal escape from the tensions and turmoils of modern living.

Currently, most of the island is a State Park and also a National Historic District.  Automobiles have been banned from the island since 1896, so you really are stepping backward in time when you choose to visit Mackinac Island for your romantic getaway.  Victorian mansions poke out over the bluffs with the town center lying below.   The streets are filled with horse-drawn carriages and flowers and plants dot the front porches of the private residences, historic inns, shops, and restaurants.

The grand-daddy of all the quaint little B & Bs and variety of luxorious accomadation which greets you upon arrival to the island, is the Grand Hotel.  It is a thriving place to visit and popular landmark on the island.   It is one of only 12 wooden hotels of its age left standing intact.
Visit the lively prosperity of a bygone era when you dine in the huge dining room or dance the night away in its ballroom.  It also has the most famous World's longest porch at 660 feet, which are filled with visitors from around the world.

So, c’mon over and feel the freshwater spray upon your face as you take the ferry across the water for your very own romantic weekend.  Going to Mackinac Island truly is getting back somewhere in time.
