Come Stay with us on Mackinac Island
There’s always something deliciously fun going on on Mackinac Island and mid-January is no exception. Don’t think for a moment that there’s nothing to do during winter on the little rock in the off season. In fact, there’s so much going on then, it’s hard to choose which activity to participate in or watch. One of the more popular activities for winter outdoor enthusiasts is the Ring of Fire festival.
In mid-January, the Ring of Fire Festival gets everyone’s taste buds singing and dancing as National Hot & Spicy Food Day is celebrated. Area restaurants create special hot and spicy dishes to tempt your tongue. Plus, weather and wind permitting, there will be a great ring of fire planned to toast up some marshmallows. I’m not sure this was what Johnny Cash had in mind when he was singing; “And it burned, burned, burned . . . . the ring of fire, the ring of fire,” but it is an enjoyable way to spend the day eating, enjoying some winter outdoor games, and then topping it off by roasting marshmallows in a communal celebration. Plus, the wildlife viewing is premium for winter creatures and their natural habitat.
We all are familiar with the summer sports of cycling, walking, and hiking around the island, but there are many winter sports, too. Some of the outdoor sports you can enjoy are cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during island winter’s. The Mackinac Island Ski Club keeps the trails well-groomed and ready during the winter and renting skis and snowshoes is a breeze at the Village Inn. Some of the outdoor natural life you’re almost guaranteed to see are rabbit, fox, coyote and pileated woodpeckers!
