Mackinac Island Fort Mackinac

Mackinac Island Fort Mackinac

On Mackinac Island, stepping back in time is a key attraction.  One of the ways to do this is to spend some time ambling through Fort Mackinac and learn about the fascinating history of this American Revolution built fortress.  When the British began to believe that Fort Michilimackinac - located at what is now Mackinaw city - was far too vulnerable to American attack, they constructed Fort Mackinac in 1780.  Americans took full control in 1796.  During the War of 1812, the British re-took the fort in a bloody battle.  It was then returned to the Americans after the war and remained active until 1895.  Following that, it was a fur trading outpost and then became a major summer resort.  Let your imagination be captured by the allure of walking around this well-preserved piece of American History.

You can enjoy picturing the various battles and learning about the different types of uniforms and military activities when you amble through the well-preserved grounds.  When the original stone fort was built over 225 years ago, the stone ramparts, south sally port, and the Officer’s Stone Quarters were all part of the original fort.  The other buildings in the fort are of more recent origin, dating from the late 1790s to 1885. The buildings have been faithfully restored to how they really looked during the final years of the fort’s occupation.  You can see history come alive with the distinctive Prussian-inspired uniforms of the many interpreters in the fort.   Find out more about us at: http://www.mackinacparks.com/  Why not come and experience it for yourself?
