Mackinac Island Eight Mile Run/Walk

Mackinac Island Eight Mile Run/Walk

This exciting summer-ending event is fun for the whole family.  When you join us for the running of this annual activity, you will experience Mackinac Island in one of the oldest and most scenic races in Michigan.  Take a step back in time to a bygone era where travel is done by foot, bicycle, carriage or horse.  Over 2,000 runners and walkers participate, so this is definitely a race you and your family will remember!

From the start line in front of Mission Point Resort, the course follows the perimeter of Mackinac Island in a clock-wise direction.  Rounding the first mile, the race travels past Victorian homes, the boat harbor, and a myriad of shops and hotels in downtown Mackinac Island. Once through the towncenter, the route follows the shoreline of the Straits of Mackinac featuring breathtaking views of the Mackinac Bridge, neighboring islands and historic rock formations.  It winds up finishing at waters edge on the lawn of Mission Point.

The St. Ignace Kiwanis Club provides water and fruit at the finish.  They also staff the three water stations along the route.  The stops are a great way to re-hydrate and to also take a moment to take in the spectacular scenery provided along the races’ course.

For families with younger children, there is the follow-up “Great Kids Race.”  After the main race, over 200 youngsters join the fun with a Kids Run held on the lakefront lawn in front of the hotel. Children receive a special shirt and medal, plus lots of fun memories.

Don’t forget about the Friday night pre-Race pasta dinner either.  It’s a great way to establish camaraderie, share previous race stories, and load up on those carbohydrates in preparation for the race itself.  It’s a healthy, fun way to enjoy Mackinac Island in September.
